"Go" makes sense from the standpoint of just not pronouncing a final -gh.
"GoX" makes sense from a "let's get the end right" standpoint.
"XoX" makes sense from a "I know Dutch" standpoint.
"GjoX" makes sense from a "I know he spoke with a Brabant accent and I'm going to say it how he said" standpoint.
"Goff" just doesn't meet any of those criteria.

I confess I don't go all the way down correct pronounciation lane myself. I pronounce the first G and a g. And the X is not full blown, only half-committed-to. I suspect the reason why the British version jarrs so much is that I am not used to it. And it sounds like they are trying without any clue as to what they are trying. A little like people who pronounce Don Quixote, Don Quijotte (think French).
