I think the British version sounds like they are not trying at all.

It seems to me that "Goff" is basically just following the rules of English pronunciation, like the word rough or cough. But then there's also through or bough so I guess the "Go" pronunciation is not much better. But it seems more like an attempt to pronounce it correctly to me (more "not English") ... probably I am biased because I like that pronunciation better and it's the one I'm used to.
