Can you put a finger on what changed?
The beginning was interesting. And then it never really followed through with it. The exploration of the ship. Instead what I got was constant contact with Earth via those damned blue stones. Hated that entire part of the show. If you're going to be lost and do a sort of Odyssey type story, then be lost/far away without contact to Earth.
I liked SG and SGA for the whimsical humor level that I never really found in SGU. Yes, it was darker. And I liked that. But there is dark humor and Eli was just not good enough to be a humor replacement for Jack O'Neill or John Sheppard.
Maybe I should watch the remaining nine episodes. Maybe.

Anybody still watching SGU? I thought the 2nd half of the season vastly improved...

There are less stones, more ship and Stargate-y themes, IMO. You should. *NM*
