For God's sake, there are like 4 Fast and Furious movies.

Horror movies are the notorious culprit of sequel making. Look at all the Saw films, zombie sequels/remakes and there is a post a few down on the board about Paranormal Activity 2.

Kids movies are another source of excellent sequel material. I have heard rumors of Cars 2 and The Incredibles 2, both of which I will go see.

As for the sequels that were better than the originals, I could come up with a few real quick:

Terminator 2
Superman 2
Aliens
Godfather 2 is amazing but it isn't better than the original
