I haven't seen it since last summer but I remember there was a part in the middle where I got worried that things would get a little too icky and preachy, around the time they made him try the weapon on an alien at the facility.
Thankfully the awesome showdown blew those worries away

I loved it too. Also, it was explained at the beginning why they couldn't use their own tech.
