Small spoiler first, if you're sure you want to know the rest, I'll spill the beans.

He doesn't kill his son to avoid him getting eaten. There are several times when he thinks about it and a time when he even shows his son how to off himself.
I saw this in the first 45 minutes that I watched.

Son does not get raped or killed. Dad is on a slow decline the whole movie, gets shot with an arrow in the leg, and continues to get worse. They make it to the ocean and it's not any better there. Dad finally gives out (I think from consumption, rather than the leg injury). This scene really tore me up.

The whole theme of "good guy vs. bad guy" and finding other good guys is big in the conversations that follow. Son sticks around with Dad's body for a while and then starts walking again and runs into another family (2 adults, 2 kids and dog) almost immediately. He opts to trust them, since they're taking care of the kids and dog, and they accept him into the group.

It's definitely worth watching all the way through, because it was a well made and well acted movie. Just don't expect to feel better after seeing it all the way through.
