I assume they stop trying to pawn off having to choose between two awful options as a replacement for depth, but I couldn't be bothered to wait through the repetition to get there.
Unfortunately, that's what people think "gritty" must mean. "Everything sucks, so pick your poison." One option is criticized as being dangerously idealist, and another chided for heartless pragmatism.
The sword might be grateful to the forge fire, but never fond of it.
