Because in the US the commercials they ran fun made it seem like some kind horror/thriller movie. I got the impression that they were stuck on an island with crazy people running around killing. I don’t like movies like anymore so I didn’t go see it in the theater. People who went to see it expecting that sort of movie were often disappointed. The Lady in the Lake was a lot like that. Watching the commercials it looked like a werewolf movie.
I dunno, I felt the Shutter Island marketing did mostly justice to the movie, a thriller with some creepy, mystery elements.
But since you mention Lady in the Water (I agree), that reminds me of Shyamalan's Village, which got a marketing that was much more horror than the film (love drama) itself.
