a) I often don't even notice.
b) shows and films are set in the real world. why shouldn't the character use real products by real brands?
c) who actually says "Wow, Chuck is using XY, so I am gonna go and buy one too"??
d) the products that manage to buy their spots in TV or movie productions usually don't sell crap, so even if person c) went to buy XY, they most likely would have purchased something decent.

I think much of it is about building familiarity with one brand, which is likely to lead you to picking that brand when you're in the market for said item. I'm sure there probably are some people that just go "I want to be like Chuck" and they're nice....but I suspect that the companies are counting on the brand familiarity subtly influencing peoples selections than anything.
