Not all drama is soapy. Zombieland was great, but this is high quality so far.

I picture this as a character-driven show that just happens to take place in a zombie apocalypse. It's kind of like BSG being character-driven in space. It's not about the technology or the zombies. It's about characters, first and foremost.
A lot of fans of "pure" Sci-Fi or Zombie content get annoyed when anything resembling drama enters the scene. I think AMC has made a good start of this, though, and look forward to more eps.
