... given that as an adaptation of the book it's pretty horrible (and more than a little grotesque), and that it's beyond the shadow of a doubt the weakest movie ever made by David Lynch (granted, it was so butchered in editing it's more a movie filmed than directed by Lynch), it remains one of the fairly few great American SF movies of that decade (and there's been fewer really great ones since...)
