Why was Robert king, why was Ned Lord of Winterfell, why were Dany and Viserys the last legitimate Targaryens etc?

The situation as it lies at the beginning of aGoT can be traced directly back to this event.

Which is kind of my point. I prefer theories to work for people who read the books once, pay attention alright, but that's it. I don't like theories for people who remember minor roles who are mentioned once or twice and suddenly seem so important. But that's just me.


I'd agree with you, except that they're mentioned multiple times throughout.
