As far as I'm concerned, I think those who have not read the books have a few advantages over those of us who have.

1) I am not sure about everyone else, but having already gone through the slower build up while reading the books (several times, with rereads), I find it immensely boring going through it again while watching the show. Had I not read the books, I would certainly find these moments more interesting.

2) Not having read the books, you cannot compare the adaptation to them. You can't be disappointed by things that have changed or when things aren't as grand as they were in the books (the tourney was pathetic, for instance).

3) You can be surprised by what happens.
