I didn't actually watch the episode, but caught up on the news. Why did they do that? Was Iveta safe? Who were the bottom 3?

Iveta was safe

Okay gang, I hope your seat belts are fastened because tonight is the first elimination round for So You Think You Can Dance 2011!

But before we bore you with the details, let’s enjoy the Dancing Dominatrices, as all 20 dancers, dressed in black; sporting garter belts and walking sticks perform to XR2′s M.I.A. choreographed by Sonya Tayeh.

And cue the impossibly lanky Cat Deeley who introduces this week’s judges: Guest Judge Megan Mulally, the effervescent Mary Murphy and the always posh Nigel Lythgoe.

Let’s pause a moment for this Public Service Announcement: Nigel plugs National Dance Day on July 30th when three choreographed dances will be posted online (difficult, medium and easy) so you and all your neighborhood friends can set up your own Flash Mob!)

There’s no more messing around as Cat gets right to it and calls out the first three couples: Melanie & Marko, Missy & Wadi and Iveta & Nick. Melanie & Marko are called out first, and to no one’s surprise they are safe. And then, in rapid-fire succession, Missy & Wadi and Iveta & Nick are pronounced safe as well. Whew! That was close. (NOT)!

Ashley & Chris and Jordan & Tad are next. A quick recap of last night’s performances and we get the fairly shocking news that Jordon & Tad are on the chopping block.

Next up is Kaitlyn (whose partner was supposed to be the injured Mitchell, but who danced with previous season’s Robert instead) and Clarice & Jes. Cat announces that Clarice & Jes are one of the bottom three couples and will need to perform a solo routine later in the show. But don’t think that means that Mitchell is safe by default; he’s also on the bottom and will need to dance for his life. The good news for him is that the doctors have released him to dance his little heart out.

Before we get to discover the fate of the remaining dancers, we have the nifty opportunity to watch a pre-recorded performance by guest singer; Keri Hilson. I know the reason I watch SYTYCD is to hear a pre-recorded song recording…

Anyway, back to what we do watch SYTYCD for – the dancers. The next three couples are called to the stage. Ryan & Ricky, Miranda & “Mr. Woo!” himself, Robert and Sasha & Alexander.
Ryan & Ricky are quickly put through to next week’s competition. And with bated breath, Cat tells us that Miranda & Mr. Woo are in jeopardy.

So, after your votes last night, the bottom three couples (plus one) are: Jordon & Tad, Clarice & Jes, Miranda & Robert and Mitchell. These seven will need to prove themselves a little bit later.
But first, an actually very cool routine of Gopak (Russian ballet) – I mean seriously cool. No, really. Could you do that?

Now our bottom seven need to dance for their lives in an insanely short 30 seconds. Mitchell is first and performs with his signature style and grace to “Say” by John Mayer. Jordon returns to her “Naughty, Naughty, Naughty!” ways and dances to the song, “Hot Like Wow” by Nadia Oh. Tad is up next and does an amazing interpretation of Gumby as he dances a rockin’ b-boy routine to “Jump Jive An’ Wail” by The Brian Setzer Orchestra. Clarice is the next and dances to “Glam” by Christina Aguilera.

Poor Nigel is beside himself when he exclaims, “There aren’t enough superlatives in the English language to describe these kids!” (I know I would be hard pressed to come up with more than 37!).
I know you’re as shocked as I am that the next dancer, Jes, dances to a Broadway style number, “Mr. Bojangles” by Robbie Williams. Is it just me, or is watching Jes a little bit like watching a Mime? Anyway… Miranda follows Jes with her dance to “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” by Leona Lewis. Mr. Woo, I mean Robert, is up next, bustin’ his b-boy moves to “Electric” by Omarion. And there you have the seven dancers whose heinies are on the line. It’s all done but the decision.
But wait, there’s more! Lady Gaga (SYTYCD’s future guest judge) released the world exclusive of her new video, “The Edge of Glory” to us first right here on SYTYCD. Wowie! And… fade to commercial… back to the elimination.

Time to announce who goes packin’. First up are the guys: Mitchell, Jes, Robert and Tad. Nigel announces that they are postponing the decision because Lady Gaga’s saxophonist, Clarence, just suffered a stroke and has been taken to the hospital. (Our prayers are truly with Clarence for a speedy recovery). Oh, and also, Nigel wants two of the boys to dance a second time before they make a decision. What the ???! In an unprecedented decision, Nigel announces that the judges would like to see Mitchell and Robert dance a second time before they make their decision. The guys are sent off stage to get their heads and dance moves together on that bombshell announcement. In the meantime, the girls take to the stage; Jordan, Miranda and Clarice are hauled up. Jordon is told that she’s amazing. Clarice hears that Nigel is happy she’s in the bottom three because he gets to watch her dance again, and Miranda is told she also is wonderful. And yet… no decision is made. Robert and Mitchell dance again and then Nigel brings the four guys back up with the girls and proceeds to tell Jes that there is no reason for him to be on the bottom. Tad hears that his b-boy and Jazz routines are tremendous. Robert and Mitchell hear that their routines were great. So what gives?

And while all our collective hearts are in our collective chests, Nigel tells Cat, “We’ve never done this in eight seasons, but… nobody is going home this week!” Wha?!! And over the screaming crowd and hugging dancers Nigel hollers out, “BUT, don’t get too excited because next week, two couples will go home!” Two. Couples. People!

Oh yea, there’s some drama my friends. So, what are your thoughts? Should someone have gone home? Who do you think should have gotten the very first, very shiny axe?

Amy

By the way, I miss you too.~KB
