To be honest the books really are not all that great at least not the first two which are all that I have read so far. They are better than the average genre fiction but they are really nothing more than that. I have not found anything that really surprised or made me think. He does a great job of building another world but I never felt any real connection to it or see any parallels to the modern world. The books are better than average mass market fantasy and the TV series is a much better than average fantasy TV series. Seeing the low quality of all previous fantasy TV series I would say the TV is further above average than the books are.


They both have great entertainment value if you take them for what they are. I do agree that they should have deviated from the books more. I think any work of art needs room for expression and to faithfully following a book ruins that. I think that is one of the reasons Phillip K Dicks stories make such great movies. So few people have ever actually read the books before they become movies the screen writer and director are free to just steal what they want. Blade Runner would have been crap if they had followed the book.
