My take on the movies you mentioned. Nate Send a noteboard - 07/09/2011 06:36:28 PM
Thor: I haven't watched it yet, but I am going to see it soon. I've heard it was okay.

X-Men First Class: Much better than X3, though that may be faint praise. I wasn't on board with some of the things they did and am not entirely satisfied with how it fits as a prequel, but it was fairly fun, had some decent acting, and didn't make me feel like I was wasting my time.

Captain America: Also a fun movie. I think I liked it a little better than First Class. Not a perfect superhero movie by any means, but a fun summer watch with good action and decent characters.

Cowboys and Aliens: I think I liked it more than the majority of critics did. It was basically all you could ask of a summer blockbuster about cowboys and aliens. Daniel Craig did a great job, I thought. Olivia Wilde's plot thread was sort of iffy, and the Ewok ending could have been better, but overall it was okay.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes: Haven't seen it. Heard good things. Never watched any of the Apes movies, so didn't really care.

Fast Five: Ugh. Didn't see it. Might be as good as they say, but I don't really care again.

Super 8: I really enjoyed this one. My favourite movie of the summer. It had a lot of personality and character, good acting and a presentation style that kept me interested throughout. I thought it was very well done. It's the only movie I've seen this summer that engaged me throughout.

Green Lantern: The trailers looked like shit, so I passed.

Conan the Barbarian: I also passed, more for lack of interest than anything the trailers did.

Pirates 4: Yuck. I went into it feeling optimistic that with a new start they could do something cool and fun with Jack Sparrow again, but this movie was a poorly-made mess. Depp was good as usual, but even he didn't seem to believe in what he was doing. By the end of the movie I didn't care about anything that was happening.

Transformers 3: The second movie was so catastrophically, insultingly bad that I'm not going anywhere near the franchise anymore, no matter how they review.

Kung Fu Panda 2: I only caught a bit of this one while my girlfriend was watching it. I never did see the first one. But it seems like a fun sort of animated movie series, and the bits I saw of the second one were decent.

Cars 2: No interest. Didn't see.

The Hangover 2: No interest. Didn't see.

Harry Potter: I liked the first half of the ending better, I think, but even though this last part didn't quite meet my expectations it was still good enough. I liked it. I'm also glad the series is over so I don't have to watch a new one every year from now on. They were never as good as the books, but they were a worthy effort at capturing the series on film, and I'm happy that they turned out as well as they did. My girlfriend and I are going to do an eight-movie series marathon at some point when they're all available. It will be awesome and by the end my brain will probably have imploded from Harry Potter overload.
