I quite enjoyed it. Nate Send a noteboard - 11/09/2011 05:38:14 PM
It makes up for my complaint last week that Amy and Rory didn't get to do anything of any relevance. This one was all about them.

The solution for getting both of them into the same timestream was a little weird and deus ex machina, but the whole setup and execution of the stuff with Amy was very well done, as was the stuff with the Doctor at the end, and the choice he forced Rory to make.

It was like the Amy's Choice episode, in a way, except this one was Rory's Choice. It seems to be setting up the idea that Rory is going to have to get Amy out of there and away from the Doctor if he wants them to have a long life together. It wouldn't be as exciting, but he's sworn to protect her, and he's coming to realize that he can't always do that with the situations she gets into because she's with the Doctor.

We had two big things indicating that this week. Rory criticizes the Doctor (with perfectly legitimate reasoning) why he doesn't just check to see if there's a plague or something before landing, the Doctor saying that's not how he travels, and Rory yelling "Then I don't want to travel with you!" And then at the end, where Rory accuses the Doctor of trying to make him (Rory) like the Doctor. Rory doesn't want to be that person who puts the people he loves into danger because that's a side-effect of the happy go lucky risk-taking lifestyle that in the long run is more important to him.

What this will mean, I'm not sure, but I'm a little afraid that it doesn't bode well for Rory. If Rory wants to leave, he won't have an easy time convincing Amy. There are only two things I could see working to get Amy out of there. One, Rory convinces the Doctor to abandon them without letting Amy know that it was Rory's choice to have that happen. Two, Rory dies because of the Doctor's lifestyle, which is something I could see driving Amy away.

The problem is that we know Amy will be back next season. We don't know either way about Rory. But it's hard to imagine Amy staying with the Doctor if Rory died. It's also hard to imagine Rory leaving the TARDIS without Amy. So I'm not sure. But I hope Rory and Amy get to have a happy ending together when all is said and done.
