Terra Nova 1.3. No spoilers. ironclad Send a noteboard - 12/10/2011 09:06:35 AM
So three episodes into the new show, it's time for a preliminary judgement:
I think the show is fun and has the potential to get very enthralling once the right pieces are moving. Of course we don't know when that will be and if the creators have the right pieces in mind. But let's have a closer look:

The good:

Stephen Lang. Sure, you expect him to say "You're not in Kansas anymore" at any moment, but he still brings a great presence to the show and there is more to his character than meets the eye. I just hope they don't make him the villain in the long run.

The protagonists. Shannon is the right kind of hero for a show like this. A man who has a lot to lose and protect, but keeps his own stubborn mind. He is likable, has a sense of humor and can still kick some ass. His wife is sweet and still a strong, intelligent woman that can take care of herself without being the victim all the time.

The plots. After three episodes it seems that the stories will mostly evolve around problems in and around Terra Nova and its surroundings. There are dinosaurs, diseases, wild nature. The family drama stuff is kept on the side. That is good news.

The setting. The "city" looks cool, and I really like the Jurassic Park feel it all has. Plus, every episode had dinosaurs so far.

The meh:

The kids. Well, they got dates a little too easily after thei arrival, for starters. And the daughter is such a cardboard female teenage character: very cute, smart, geeky but very shy and ditzy around guys. Such girls only exist in TV shows.
The son was pretty dumb in the pilot but stayed out of trouble ever since. It's not gonna stay like that, of course. Why can't we ever get a TV show with round teenage characters that aren't sweet darlings or moping emos, causing trouble?

Not enough interesting minor characters. Yet. But we may slowly get there. Malcolm and his crush on the wife is fun enough and the bartender could be what Zeke was for Lost's Others. Plus we will certainly hear from the Sixers more and more in the coming weeks.

So...
Overall a fun show, not flawless but entertaining without being dumb and delivering what you'd expect from a dinosaur show.
