As for the six episode season, I have read the argument that it is due to having the same writers do all the episodes in a show, which is a marked difference from the american way of doing stuff.
Also, when you only have 6 episodes, you can make all of them good...

Smaller groups of writers and crew mean it takes longer to produce each individual episode
