This tragic comedy directed by Alexander Payne is about a man (George Clooney) who has to deal with his wife's coma, the sudden and unexpected news of her affair and his difficult teenage daughters. The film really embraces its setting of Hawaii. That starts with a very odd Hawaiian soundtrack, includes the landscapes and suburban towns as well as the odd clothes people wear. That makes for a very unique atmosphere, which fits perfectly to the sweet, touching and sad tone of the film.

Although the trailer suggested a little more laughs than we get in throughout the entire film, it still often counters the bitterness of the story with humor. The acting is outstanding, not only by Clooney but down to the smallest role. Shailene Woodley will most likely the next big thing in her age group, and deservedly so. Her huge teary eyes stay with you for quite a while after the film.

While my expectations were not entirely met, especially when compared to the ingenious "Sideways", Payne's film still deserves the praise it is getting during the current awards season. A very slow but realistic, funny and sad film that deals with themes like mourning, family and betrayal of trust on many levels and really makes you care for its characters. Recommended.

7 out of 10 Hawaii shirts.
