Why do all of the shows that really click with me get cancelled after one season?

And why don't people tell me they're cancelled before I start watching them?
Better Off Ted was amazing, exactly the kind of comedy I like - and I tend to dislike comedy.
And now I've discovered a TV show on our On Demand service called The Unusuals which is both hilarious and fun and it turns out it had only one season. Not happy.
Why aren't there more people like me who watch these shows and keep them on air?

The Unusuals started the same week as Castle, but on Thursday and went up against CSI.
