I'm not going to beat around the bush ... I hated this movie. By hate, I mean, I wanted to apply somewhere to get my time back. This is actually pretty remarkable for me considering I'm a sci-fi/fantasy fan and will give most movies of this genre a chance, even if they're a little hopeless.
This movie broke a few records in my books.
Firstly, I think it abused mythology to almost epic proportions. Try and think of the worst mythological inaccuracies and this movie will attempt to fulfil them for you. Not that they were trying to retell a classic story, but they could at least have tried to keep some things intact. On top of this they clumped everything together. They clearly thought of everything in mythology that they forgot about in the first movie and gave it a few seconds screen time.
The plot is dreadful, and here is where they introduce the next record-breaker... unlimited cliches of the worst kind. Seriously, can you imagine how you want to vomit into your popcorn when you realize that the world-saving hero from the first movie is now a fisherman who loves his trade and doesn't want anything to do with fighting...
You also have to deal with leaden characters who absolutely cannot captivate even the most basic audience. Perseus is absolutely terrible. Sam Worthington is far past his expiry date. Andromeda is now blond and has moved from simpleton victim to warrior Queen. There are some interesting moments with Liam Neeson and Ralph Fiennes as Zeus and Hades, but the rest of the characters are utterly murderous in their monotony.
The script is fantastically inane, and characters break out into random epic speeches followed by roars of approval, that leave you sitting in your chair wondering where it all comes from.
The effects are quite good at times, but they are not nearly as good as the first movie, and they were hardly laudable in some people's opinion.
If you want a few hours of mindless, and I use that word quite literally, entertainment, this movie might do it for you. I was in that mood and I still became irritated with it all. I was one of those people who actually liked the first one, though I liked the classic one too, but this new addition is scandalous.
