Allegedly, SyFy are doing this because there won't be a series, so decided to experiment with the already-filmed pilot through this new release system. It is absolutely nothing to do with the fact it's fairly cheesy (although, to be fair, also a lot better than THE PLAN), of course
The space battles are pretty good though, and the 'old' Raptor is a nice design. Arguably more impressive than the one in the series itself.
