And so felt no desire to see this movie after I heard the initial reviews of it. I like the music, but I don't feel like watching famous actors and actresses struggle to do it justice. Not to mention that movies simply look and feel more realistic than plays. That makes it all the more jarring and noticeable when the story they tell turns out to be completely unrealistic and impossible. It's one thing to watch Marius and Cosette fall in love on stage, where the imagination is filling in half of the events anyway, and you can just focus on the emotions and not on the how or why, but I can't turn off my brain to that extent in a movie. Really the only part of the movie I'd care to see is Anne Hathaway, given how many glowing reviews she's gotten for her part.
Yeah, Marius and Cosette falling in love is really very shallow even by Hollywood musical standards...
Like I said, Hathaway definitely is good, no question about it, but Fantine is simply the key part of the musical, or so it seems to me, it's much easier for her to shine than for some of the others.

I take it you're too fond of the book to see it disgraced so in the musical version.

I think it's more the trashy nature of the songs makes it impossible to watch.
