The libretto, shall we say, is so damn terrible that I want to vomit when I hear the songs. Also, aside from a couple of songs (that fat English pustule woman sings one of the better ones), the musical effort is a failed one as well. If I were to rate modern musicals by how well written the songs are, I think Phantom of the Opera is leagues above Les Miserables in the quality of the score.
Hugo's novel wasn't exactly the best written, but I felt it had depth and a meaningful message that gets lost in cheap lyrics meant for the proles and totally forgettable music.
