The show really does have very little to do with the books now. Roland00 Send a noteboard - 20/05/2014 03:27:50 AM

Edit, this was supposed to be a main thread reply.

Did I seriously just saw Jon Snow arguing they show close all the tunnels?

Whatever I am not caring anymore if the books and the shows are different, that just caused my jaw to drop for they reversed his position.

----------------------

Yes they wording is almost verbatim from the books, that said the tone of the part is slightly different. In the show this is used to show that Cersei is a vindictive bitch and everyone sees Tyrion as a monster (after all rumors said he had claws and a tail). In the books though it showed a different perspective how the dreams of men go awry. Tyrion's and Oberyn's mothers were trying to plot a union of the two houses (Cersei and Oberyn or Elia and Jamie), yet Tyrion's mother died in childbirth and never discussed the subject with Tywin, Tywin then turn down Oberyn mother's marriage offer since he wanted Cersei to marry Rhaegar.

In the end though it is Elia who marry's Rhaegar, Mad King Aerys turns down Tywin for being too uppity, Aerys tries to keep the bloodlines pure first looking for a Valyrian bride from across the sea in the free cities. Aerys sends his cousin Steffon Baratheon (Robert and Stannis's father) to lead this envoy for the search of the Valyrian bride, Steffon and his ship are lost at sea (Patchface is the only surrvior). After the failure of Steffon Baratheon Aerys had Rhaegar marry his cousin Elia Martell. Elia is part Targaryean for her ancestors back a 100 years included Maron Martell who married Daenerys Targaryen (daughter of Aegon IV), Maron Martell built Daenerys the water gardens and started the tradition of mixing common born with royalty in the children youth to generate empathy and trust with the people of Dorne.

There is also a humourous sidebit that Elia was taken up with one of her suitors named Baelor Hightower, also known as Baelor Brightsmile or Baelor Breakwind.

“Elia found it all exciting. She was of that age, and her delicate health had never permitted her much travel. I preferred to amuse myself by mocking my sister’s suitors. The only one who was even halfway presentable was young Baelor Hightower. A pretty lad, and my sister was half in love with him until he had the misfortune to fart once in our presence. I promptly named him Baelor Breakwind, and after that Elia couldn’t look at him without laughing. I was a monstrous young fellow, someone should have sliced out my vile tongue.”

Yes, Tyrion agreed silently. Baelor Hightower was no longer young, but he remained Lord Leyton’s heir; wealthy, handsome, and a knight of splendid repute. Baelor Brightsmile, they called him now. Had Elia wed him in place of Rhaegar Targaryen, she might be in Oldtown with her children growing tall around her. He wondered how many lives had been snuffed out by that fart.
