I read the trade paperback collection of the story years ago when they killed off Superman in the comics, and I think this movie told it much better and more concisely. The endless punch-fest just dragged on interminably on paper, while this fight between the same two opponents made Doomsday seem more dangerous and Superman more heroic and badass.
I love how they used the shared first name of Clark's and Bruce's mothers to bring the parallels of the two heroes to a climax. It's one of those details that was not inserted in the film to create that plot point, but it's easy to overlook. I am assuming that at some point in the last seventy years or so, someone has made a thing about that on page, but it was still neat. Once Clark said her name, I suddenly remembered that it was both their names, from other shows and movies, and it just seemed such a natural way to make Batman hold up and then start seeing the humanity in Clark he had previously refused to recognize.
