I think the whirly-sand entity was an ascended being. It reminded me of how the Harcesis (Shifu) appeared to SG-1 in the Absolute Power episode.

And what the hell was that at the end when a pod detached itself from the ship and flew away? The song at the end reminded me of Firefly for some reason.
