And I prefer the ending to GIANT SQUID FROM NOWHERE!!!!
You completely missed the point. The whole genius of Watchmen is that it subverts the cleanness of comic books. It makes the costumed hero a bodily being, including fetishes and kinks as part of it. And the ending is SUPPOSED to be bodily and messy and unpleasant! And IT DIDN'T COME OUT OF NOWHERE, DAMMIT!!! (Yes. I did. That was me using multiple exclamation marks. AND caps. Doesn't happen often, but I felt he occasion called for it.)
From a pure storyteller viewpoint, it is a horrible idea to make your entire plot hinge on a completely unseen, unmentioned and undeveloped feature only revealed in the last 1/6th of the story (see also: Lost!). Unless that's the whole point, but that wasn't the whole point in Watchmen. Using the threat of Dr. Manhattan tied it into everything that came before without changing what comes after one little bit.

It didn't seem long at all, to me. Or slow. *NM*
