But it was there in the background all the way through. Didn't you read the newspaper cuttings?
Without adding another three hours to the movie, there was simply no way to add enough background information to make it not COME OUT OF NOWHERE!!!! and confuse the hell out of people.

The change in the medium necessitated a change in the ending. I understand why a lot of people didn't like what they changed it to - but the ending as written simply wouldn't have worked. And I personally think the ending they went with pulled all the strings together in a perfectly satisfactory way.
