The movie is unashamedly cliched, and tries to cram all of greek mythology into one film. Zeus's lightning bolt has been stolen, and he blames Poseidon's son. He wants it back in 14 days, or there will be war aka. the end of the world.

Everything that has ever been in greek mythology makes an appearance, and it's all very silly and impressive. The movie is lots of fun, with some good one liners and no real moments of idiocy. There are some good special effects, and the characters are played well and are likeable, unlike what the reviews generally said. I've never read the book, so I didn't notice if they changed anything.

I can't help but wonder why immortal gods look craggy-faced & middle-aged. You would think gods would stick with young, so they can be hot, or old so they can look respectable and wise. Boromir & Lucius Vorennus are two of the best tragic heroes in contemporary drama, but why would two of the most powerful beings in the world choose to look like them?

And Athena having kids? She was one of the three virginal goddesses! You don't go f***ing with ancient mythology just to make your heroine cool (Athena being pretty much the coolest goddess), or make her ugly so she can be plausibly asserted to stupid literal-minded people to have a teenaged daughter (the only explanation I can think of for picking that old hag to play her - "We need to appease people stupid enough to accept the notion of gods who are more than 2,000 years old, but who will not believe an actress in her 20s could have a teenaged daughter" ). When you are casting one of the most legendary goddesses in Greek mythology, who is usually hot, and has three lines in the whole film and zero characterization, you hire a damn model!

And what the hell was up with that main kid? It was glaringly obvious from things that were said from day one that his father was under constraints and that their estrangement was in no way his choice. In case the kid missed all the hints and implied mentions up to that point, it should have been abundantly clear from the context of the gods' meeting he observed. But he still decides to be a little bitch about it. Lucius Vorenus would have smacked him silly and shipped him out to the army.

And as a final criticism, presuming this IS aimed at children, are you really trying to tell disabled kids that maybe their learning disabilities are due to a secret super-powered heritage? That because of who their secret REAL parents are, they will be handed stuff without having to earn it? Give JK Rowling credit, she might have essentially told this exact same story, but at least she created her own setting & mythology, whose ridiculous names are not nearly so aggravating as seeing real mythology getting twisted until it screams for mercy, by lazy writers who want to be the next Harry Potter-author and filmmakers trying to cash in on the Clash of the Titans hype.
