IMO, the memories (incl. experience, personality etc.) of LTT in Rand's head were real, but I tend to think the "communications" were not. I think this was Rand's schizophrenia. He made up a Voice, because he couldn't cope with the fact he was LTT. He was Rand, the Dragon Reborn, sane and sound, and all the rest (incl. leaked memories and so on) he made to be the raving mad monster and kinslayer LTT. The fact the "voice" contradicted him and inteferred on its own, even tried to convince Rand sometimes or to take over his control, is often how schizophrenics describe their "voices".
How did Rand become schizophrenic? Simply because he learned that he is the Dragon? And if he was schizophrenic, how could he cure himself of this mental disorder at the end of TGS? Just by realizing that he was schizophrenic? We know from RJ at least that while the True Power can be used to heal insanity, the One Power can not be used to Heal insanity. This implies that it is very difficult to cure insanity (also Semirhage said that Graendal failed in most cases).
To me it makes more sense that - like Semirhage said - LTT's voice was real (like Perrin can really communicate with wolves), provided by the Pattern as a guide, probably triggered by Rand's using of the OP. Rand wasn't insane per se, but partly LTT's madness, grief and paranoia seeped into Rand's thoughts, especially since he suffered anyway much stress. When Rand didn't need the voice as a distinct personality anymore, the Pattern allowed that the voice was integrated into Rand. Also BS apparently indicated in an answer that the Pattern/Wheel had a direct part in Rand's epiphany. Thus, Rand wasn't insane/schizophrenic.

LTT was close to perfect, and he barely managed to eke out a draw with the Shadow.
