“Are you any relation to Jain Charin. Noal?” Mat chewed an olive and discreetly spat the pit into his palm. The thing tasted not far from spoiling. So did the next one. But he was hungry, so he gobbled them down and followed with some crumbly white goat cheese while ignoring the frowns Tuon directed at him.

The old man’s face went still as stone, and Mat had torn off a piece of bread and eaten that as well before Noal answered. “A cousin,” he said at last, grudgingly. “He was my cousin.”

The common belief is that he is in fact Jain, and that he came up with the "cousin" story on the spot ... thus the long pause before he answered.

Everyone pretty much figures Noal is Jain Farstrider. That scene kind of reinforces it. He's probably lying because he feels guilt over his lost wife, but Tuon sees through the lie and tries to comfort him. I like that scene. I think Noal Farstrider () is probably going to die in the Tower of Ghenjei in ToM, but before he does he'll either tell the truth about who he is, or it will be revealed posthumously. Likely through Moiraine.
