Damn, my lack of information that is not IN the books screws me again. Every time I have a good original theory to post, someone has already asked RJ thatsame question, gotten the answer I don't want to hear, and posted it somewhere I've never heard of just to make me feel stupid! lol

Actually, you can extrapolate it from the books as well. Gaidal Cain disapeared from TAR less than a year ago, so Olver is way too old.

Olver = Gaidal was quite a popular theory before it was shot down IIRC.

Popularity does not mean that it is logical.

No, but RJ blurred the issue on purpose.

The whole thing came from the fact RJ set it up as a red herring (and said so when he shot down the theory). He had Birgitte mention Cain could be a boy already. A lot of readers let her do their thinking, and didn't question the validity of her affirmation. They didn't realise Birgitte's perception of time in TAR is as unreliable as anyone else's and unlike her, who thought it could have been years ago, we knew how much time had passed since she last saw Gaidal. It was weeks ago in the real world, not years. Not only he couldn't be a boy, but he wasn't even born then. RJ also on purpose didn't have Nynaeve and Elayne catch up on Birgitte's irrational fears and point out to her it wasn't years ago they met her for the first time, and one of them had seen Gaidal too, so....

A lot of readers who aren't paying very close attention also had problems understanding the fluidity of time while in TAR (which is more a matter of perception and can vary from visitor to visitor). They had the strange notion that it could go backward in "real world time" as well as forward. They were not getting that the last time we saw Gaidal couldn't possibly have been years ago in "TAR time" but only weeks ago in the real world. It took RJ's explanation of how time in TAR doesn't work like that to convince them Birgitte was wrong.

I've been doing my research, He's not Gaidal or a red herring - 06/06/2010 06:04:29 AM 484 Views
The red herring bit was also one of his purposes, actually. - 06/06/2010 11:53:40 AM 403 Views
