Both, plus weapon skills. Cannoli Send a noteboard - 16/06/2010 12:41:28 PM
1. Who killed Asmodean?
I never understood why this matters.
2. Strength in the One Power
RJ himself said he only keeps The List to understand which minor characters should to defer to which other minor characters. Unless it is a miniscule level such as possessed by Morgase or Sorilea, any channeler is capable of beating any other channeler. They don't get extra hit points as they improve their ability or develop their strength. Each sister or other relevant channeler has enough strength to produce lethal effects, and that's all you really need. It's like arguing a fight between a guy with a .22 and a guy with a minigun. Obviously one has a certain advantage, but the outcome is not foretold. What matters is how you use it, and the .22 is sufficient firepower to take a life. There is no difference between taking a .22 round to the temple or getting perforated by sixty rounds from the minigun.

3. Relative skill with weapons and/or superior generalship
Like with the channeling strength question, only even more irrelevant. These skills have NO bearing whatsoever beyond who wins a fight, unlike strength in the One Power. And HOW you use the weapon is every bit as important as your skill with it, or its power. No life or death fight (or any fight with stakes worth mentioning) is going to be fought in a sterile environment or laboratory conditions, so why quibble about the difference that might only manifest under those circumstances. Being the greatest general in the world means nothing when your adversary has vastly superior numbers and firepower and knows how to use them effectively. Being the greatest swordsman is irrelevant if you are up against a moderately competant archer from a sufficient distance. Lan dispensed with any idea of the universal superiority of archery in the first book. The only skill that really matters is one you can apply to the task immediately in front of you.
