I always thought that the Black Wind was a creature of Mashadar.

Considering its servitude to Fain, as well as its feeding on Trollocs. The servitude to Fain is the biggest piece of evidence that the Black Wind is Mashadar-borne. Not to mention the Mashadar-esque eating of souls of the Black Wind is rather Mashadar-esque.
The Ways were probably darkened by the taint of Saidin. Which allowed Mashadar to leak in through the gate at SL (Mashadar hates light), and flow free through the Ways as a rather nasty parasite.
