How did Lanfear a.k.a Mierin actually "drill" the hole into the "Bore" and what was the DO doing?

It was never fully explained. How do you think she did this?
We're told she was looking for a single power source that both male and female channelers could use in the same way, not saidin/saidar, but the same exact source. Why would she even be looking for something like this?
What was she doing with Saidar that accomplished this "drilling"?
It sounds like she must have been drilling into the Pattern itself and by poking a "hole" in it she found the Dark One? So was the Dark One surrounding the Pattern waiting to be found?
Was he put there by the Creator to be found like the serpent being placed into the "Garden of Eden"?
