Symbolism... Phelix Send a noteboard - 19/08/2010 03:13:11 AM
I know this has been hashed out and rehashed, but I just read a new take on this line from The Karaethon Cycle that made me slap myself upside the head for not getting a long time ago.

Some of us were discussing this here at RaFO a few weeks ago and nobody came up with this idea even then...

Special thanks to Linda over at The Thirteenth Depository for making me feel stupid up to now.

The simple and obvious explanation is that the blade of light is indeed Callandor, and the 3 shall be as 1 is a reference to the fact that he will use it in a circle with 2 women to counter the flaw.

The only question is, who will be the 2 women in the circle with Rand and who will lead? Obvious candidates include Elayne and Aviendha for several obvious reasons, Nynaeve and Egwene for different but no less obvious reasons. Then there is Alivia, Cadsuane, and the newly returned Moiraine.

I'm torn on who I really think the 2 women will be... My gut says Elayne and Aviendha with Min standing by guarding everyone. But I can't get past my head saying that he would want them to be the strongest women possible. No, I'm decided on Elayne and Aviendha simply because he knows he can trust them both and he won't give up control in a circle like that to just anybody.

So now I'm trying to remember if it's possible to use more than one angreal at a time. As Callandor is a male sa'angreal, Rand will have to be the one to channel through it, though he won't be leading the circle. Why can't the other members of the circle have their own angreal or even sa'angreal to channel through? I just can't remember what the rules are on this point but I'm feeling I'm probably wrong. Can somebody help on this?

It also just occurred to me that based on the pacing of the storyline, Elayne will probably be giving birth to the twins right around time for the Last Battle. So maybe she'd be out for that reason alone? Or maybe that just means Aviendha would have to lead even though she has less experience? It is an interesting wrinkle.

Okay, rip away...

First, a factual answer, yes individual members of a circle can use their own angreal and have a nested angreal effect. We saw this with the Bowl of the Winds. Individual women would draw on their angreal, then be brought into the circle. This should be the same for Rand and the other two.

I think the two with him will have to be symbolically important. Aviendha speaks to the past (the Aiel) and the future (the remnant of a remnant). I also think Nynaeve or one of the Windfinders would also be symbolically significant, but Egwene might be the better match for this usage.

Egwene and Aviendha are almost equals in strength, both hold significant positions within their own societies, and would speak to bringing the main continent into alignment. Egwene brings the Aes Sedai and the Westlands, Aviendha brings the Aiel, both are tied to LTT's past, Rand's present, and the future of the world.

That's just one possibility. I'm not wedded to it, or anything.
I was Phelix on wotmania, I will always be Phelix in the "real" world, and now I am Phelix on RAFO.
