"If only the characters knew" is such a common faulty premise.
Even in the internet age, people disagree on many things, despite their best attempt to communicate. For some issues, political and religious topics especially, after the initial period, no amount of additional communication can change minds. It took years of facts later, even when it is possible, to change people's minds. On some issues, communications are over-rated.
But people still do it, since it is just so much fun to second guess fictional characters who can't defend themselves!
