At the same time that the taint was placed, almost every piece of infrastructure from the Age of Legends was destroyed during the War of Power and the Time of Madness. After that, the people wouldn't have had the capabilities of growing crops as well, or anything else because the technology wasn't there.

The taint may have had negative effects, but they probably weren't significant or there should have been bigger positive effects created from the Cleansing.
