Can you really not see that just about ANYONE who might be so interested and able to explore had a bunch of other stuff with implications touching on the potential end of existence on their plate?
moment to check out the hanging ancient city that might have all sorts of useful knowledge. There might've been a war time poster saying, "these are the signs to know you're facing a gholam."
Can you really not see that those characters (who might be so interested and able to explore) have had plenty of down-time, plenty of moments when they weren't worried about the fact that reality could end in the next 10 minutes?
On your other point: remember when Moiraine ditched the DR so she could do some research with two old AS who were secluded scholars? By your logic, that was terribly dumb of Moiraine - she left Rand with no AS protection, and she could have learned nothing useful. Instead, she came out of her brief sabbatical with a powerful weapon (bf), and she saved Rand's bacon because of it.
