I'm sure he doesn't wear it at all when traveling with Nynaeve and Elayne. I can't remember much mention of it in Salidar or Ebou Dar. I'm pretty sure that he didn't wear it after leaving Ebou Dar either. I think the comment has more to do with how nice what he's wearing is. I am assuming that you're referring to the part where Mat comments on his clothes before they go to see Elayne.
