if she just said 'open this letter in 5 days' she'd be betraying the shadow, because she still thought it might be possible she'd be alive then. So she had to say 'open it only if I don't come back', because she knew/convinced herself the only way she wouldn't come back is if she was dead. Then she had to say 'in 30 days' because she had to set a reasonable time (even though she says in the letter she'd be back in a day if she was alive). 
I think the '30 days' and 'do what it says' parts are meant to indicate that she was trying to arouse his curiousity so he'd for sure open it. But really, she could have just said 'if I don't come back in 5 days, open this letter and read it', without betraying the shadow.
So yeah, it seems stupid.
