everyone was always "a head taller" or "a hand taller" or "head and shoulders taller" but that changed every other time it was described.

From the notoriously short Cairhienin to the famously tall Aiel, and everyone in between the two. I forget which one, but wasn't it noted at some point that only one of the chiefs who follow Rand is taller than him? That said it all for me: Rand is freakishly tall; I'm kinda surprised RJ didn't put him in the 7' range.
