Rand has to figure it out by himself. Technically also Mat never died, because Rahvin's balefire death erased his death, although the Aelfinn said he would die. This shows that it's open to interpretation what they meant. And in my view it's pretty obvious, especially considering the other clues, that Rand has to fake his death.

He was hung and Rand had to restart his heart when he came out of the Ter'angreal. If your heart has stopped and you aren't breathing, you are dead. Mat was dead and Rand revived him. Had he actually been alive and Rand did what he did, it would have killed him. He just wasn't dead long enough for his body to fully shut down. That takes a while.
