Even if it meant a lot of the story cut? If the movies were like freezing with thoughts popping up, narrated by someone we don't see? You'll just go back to reading the books without being angered at whoever just TOTALLY WRECKED your favourite books? 
I think it would bring much more of an audience to the series. And I would watch any WOT related film or series, unless it turns out to be really bad. In which case, I'll just go back to reading the books.
