Re: I still think Moiraine's Illian plan for Rand was the most epic fail in the series

It still brings a smile to my face. Think you know more than Rand does huh? She really had to twist that prophecy to make it fit Illian.
She's not the only one to make that mistake, though (and it's impossible to tell what would have happened - Sammael certainly didn't expect an attack, and we can't know how Lanfear might have interferred behind the scenes). Most of the characters who have tried to interpret prophecies (aside from Dreamers and their dreams) have erred, some times placing the Pattern in danger. Moiraine fell for the "prophecy" about the DO and the Eye, and she tried to convince Rand to attack Sammael. Rand got lucky with his interpretation of the prophecies in TSR, but it nearly led him to disaster when it came to the Seanchan (trying to make the binding between him and Tuon happen). Of course there's Elaida, and Siuan's own misinterpretations and so on. And Graendal's in TOM. The biggest misinterpretations so far are probably Rand's own (though Moiraine sounded pretty disastrous as well). First by taking the prophecy of the Finns about the cardinal points to devise his strategy in KOD/TGS, which nearly undid everything (and now it seems "obvious" this prophecy will come true, or will begin to be fulfilled, with the alliance at the Fields of Merrilor where the world will finally be "as one". At least, the north and east part will be fulfilled, and the West and South is already true by the Seanchan. All that remains is bringing the two entities together after that), then trying again to force the Pattern to make happen the prophecies concerning the DOTNM, which worsened things and precipitated the attack on the WT. Of course, in the great lines this was following what the Wheel really meant to make happen (incl. Rand reaching bottom, which was necessary to open the way to a possible, but very necessary, epiphany before TG), but this was still mistakes from Rand to believe he knew what prophecies meant. There are just two big examples of success at interpretation. One concerns more a riddle than prophecy (about the Cleansing) and Rand took care to get opinions before proceeding. The other concerns Rand's hunch of going to the Waste, but in that case Rand's interpretation was very loose, not concerned with the details.
Cadsuane and Min are currently trying to play the seers again with the prophecy concerning Callandor. Given the previous odds, chances are their current interpretation is wrong (and considering that channelling the DO near Shai'tan is dangerous in the extreme and lead to the taint previously, this is potentially disastrous). I get the feeling that Min has yet to discover something that will change their interpretation, and will form the basis of Rand's final plan. It's likely to be some philosophic/scientific principle not directly tied to facing the DO, but that will spark the solution to LTT/Rand (I could see Jordan going that way, as it would have let him expose the elements of the solution before the battle, then after leaving the reader to reason it and fail, show it at TG. He's done something much like that for the cleansing.)

think the most likely answer is that RJ hadn't yet ironed out all of the details concerning the OP *NM*

But it makes much less sense - the greater strength of men in general has had negligible impact

It's of more interest to fans than to anyone else (except, I guess, Aes Sedai).

I love that scene, mainly because it made her think twice about glibly thinking he's crazy.

Early Moiraine sucks. Actually, pre-finn Moiraine sucks. We should really be hoping for a change.

Personally, I think it has everything to do with the sparks and not the Power.
