What we've learned about defeating the Forsaken Sidious Send a noteboard - 22/03/2012 01:44:50 PM

Cadsuane made a very important discovery when she caught Semirhage: never fight the Forsaken on their own terms. The Forsaken aren't very forthcoming enemies. They tend to lay a trap and then expect their victims to walk into it. It's amazing how often their victims do fall for this ploy, though. However, if the Light are to defeat them definitively, they need to learn from Cadsuane's discovery and circumvent these traps.

Most of these traps were evaded using luck on the part of the Light. Obviously the protagonists can't be allowed to die, and they probably would have if they had been anything else. Considering a protagonist fatality is possible during TG, it would be nice if the Light didn't walk into any of these recurring traps. Examples of these traps include..

- Be'lal cornering Rand in an attempt to obtain Callandor. Rand was saved only because of Moiraine.
- Rahvin capturing Rand in TAR. Rand was saved because of Nynaeve.
- Semirhage ambushing Rand. Rand was saved by Cadsuane's ter'angreal.
- Mesaana ambushing Egwene and friends. Egwene saved by the dreamspike before Mesaana could take them away to a battle of her choosing.
- Sammael pulling Rand to a battlefield of his choosing. Rand saved by Mashadar.
- Lanfear pulling Rand into a direct duel with the Power. Rand saved by Moiraine.
- Moghedien ambushing Nynaeve in TAR. Nynaeve saved by Birgitte.

The point of this is to try and not fight the Forsaken on their own terms. You only increase your chances of losing. There have been some successes with this tactic. Rand was meant to follow a series of traps set by Rahvin in Caemlyn but he almost instantly killed Rahvin by Travelling to his throne room. In the same way, at the Cleansing they refused to meet the Forsaken on equal terms and loaded up with mixed circles, ter'angreal and sa'angreal.

So who do we have left? Moridin, Demandred, Cyndane, Moghedien and Graendal. That we know of.

Cyndane is already trying her tricks with Rand in TAR, and I'm sure Moghedien will get going soon. Graendal may be broken, and out of action until the battle proper. It will be difficult to anticipate traps created by Demandred and Moridin, but one of the keys to success will be for Rand and his allies to anticipate these attempts to lure them to a certain place. Demandred is particularly worrisome, and it will be interesting to see how Rand obviates this threat.
