... that comes to mind, in the context of the poll, is "reluctant leader". Especially the Mat of the past few books. I would not have called him that in the first few books.

He's also a "reluctant hero", when he chooses to rescue/help those who need it, at personal risk. But I think he's more often a leader than a hero.

I definitely don't think he's best described as an opportunist. Yes, he took the ruby dagger from SL, but that's about the only time I can think of when he was opportunistic. And, he's changed/matured quite a bit since then.
