I think Mat pointed out that it was an attempt for the pattern to reset. I took it that a bubble of evil or something else drove everyone nuts. They should have died but equally they should have not gone nuts in the first place. The pattern tried to deal with the glitch so its like a computer with a glitch that constantly is restarting as the last saved setting and can't get past the problem, at least as far as the town goes.
